Canada's Wonderland

Canada's Wonderland is the only major theme park in Canada, but it makes up for this by having a huge number of coasters. In fact, it has the second highest coaster count in the World; second only to Six Flags Magic Mountain. The park is located in a suburb of Toronto which makes it easy to access. There is a good range of coasters, with three (Leviathan, Behemoth and Yukon Striker) being by far the best. There is also a water park within the theme park for hot days.

BEST BITS
  • There are three outstanding rides. Leviathan and Behemoth are both really good B&M hyper-coasters, and Yukon Striker is an excellent dive coasters.

  • We here at Thompson's Theme Park Tips don't approve of fast track tickets. But, since they exist, we should say the ones at Canada's Wonderland are very good and reasonably priced.

  • Season passes are good value; it paid for itself in two visits.

  • The park has a very broad range of flat rides.

  • All the rides have places to leave your bag so you don't have to pay for lockers.

  • Having a water park as part of the park (and included within the single ticket price) is really good as it gives a much wider range of things to do.

DOWN-SIDES
  • We found the rides seemed to break down more often than most parks. There were also some rides where ride audio or effects were not working.

  • There are no queue time boards and none of the rides have queue times displayed at their entrances. They are on the app, but we found that quite inaccurate.

  • There are surprisingly few toilets for a park of this size.

  • Two of the best three rides are very similar. The range of rides is quite narrow and there is nothing unique in the park.

  • All the queue lines are just lines with no theming or entertainment.

  • There are two wooden coasters. Wilde Beast is bad, but Canadian Minebuster is one of the worst, most painful ride experiences we've ever had. It should be demolished.

TOP TIPS
  • You can get free water at any stall with a drinks machine. There are also refill stations in the park.

  • If you have dietary requirements you should check in advance where you can eat and also ask the staff, because nothing is labelled.

  • We suggest getting to the park early to avoid queues, as people seem to arrive later.

  • Starting at Behemoth is a good idea as the queues are shorter first-thing.

  • If you're going on a busy day, fast pass tickets are worth considering.

  • Take your swimming gear with you as the water park is within the theme park.

  • If you're in the Toronto area, it's worth taking a trip up to the Blue Mountains resort to ride their Ridge Runner mountain coaster.

One of the many flat rides at Canada's Wonderland

Our view on the rides

There are three excellent rides at Canada's Wonderland. Leviathan and Behemoth are both B&M hypercoasters; our favourite kind. Leviathan is bigger and faster, though Behemoth has more airtime. Both are worth riding multiple times if you can. They are both better sat towards the front. The third of the big three is Yukon Striker, a wonderfully smooth and exciting dive coaster.

Of the other rides, Vortex was the best. This is a coaster where the cars swing freely under the track which we found very fun. What let this park down was the quality of the dark rides. Wonder Mountain's Guardian is just a train moving in front of screens. Boring and completely unimmersive compared to most dark rides. The two wooden coasters are horrific (even by usual wooden coaster standards). Particularly Minebuster which we strongly recommend avoiding as it is painfully rough.

We were impressed with the park operations but we did notice special effects seemed to be not working on some of the rides, which was a shame.

The fast passes that they offer allows unlimited access to almost all the rides (including the big three). This makes the standard queues hard to predict and often very long. Here at Thompson's Theme Park Tips we don't usually use fast track tickets, but on a busy day we found them invaluable.
